Hi all. I downloaded the saypad program, recommended by jim Kitchen on his website. Basically, saypad is a text editing/reading program that uses the microsoft sapi 5 text to speech engine. Here is my problem. I had to uninstall saypad so that I could reinstall real player and have saypad as the last program in programs menu.
When I reinstalled saypad, I got the following message. "sapi 5.1 is already on your system. saypad will just reinstall the text to speech part."
My question is. How can I completely remove sapi5? I removed sapi 5 and saypad using add/remove programs, but i got the same message when I tried to reinstall saypad. I am using windows 98. I will soon be upgrading to xp and I dont want sapi5 getting in the way of xp installation. any help would be appreciated.

hmm, sounds interesting. I think you should go to C:windowssystem32 and delete the file sapy.dll, or look for all the files named sapy, except images or other things that don't have .dll extension. Hope that helps

yeah, but first you should back up the files before you delete things. indescriminate deletions in the system32 directory could leave you in the worst possible sinario, and certain users should remember that. Bottom line, sapi doesn't affect that installation of windows xp, as sapi 5 comes with xp so either way you win.
Hope this was a bit more helpful

Thanks guys. I am not currently using xp but will soon be upgrading. at least I know that uninstalling sapi under windows 98 before upgrading to xp wont cause any conflicts!
Oh, lou, that was almost the same advice the author of the saypad program gave me. he recommended renaming sapi.dll instead of deleting... but I guess i dont have to do either since sapi.dll will just be overwritten when I install xp.

you can rename .dll files, unless they are in use by another program; you need to kill that proces in order to delete these kind of files which may result quite dangerous. I had a spyeare with a .dll extension and couldn't get ride of it; I had to log of windows to delete it, but how the heck can you do it without a screen reader? pluss, noone of my family knows so much about computers...
